Design Inspiration

Every day I walk along Portobello beach. The view is ever changing and always brings me a sense of calm.  This box draws on this feeling to create an abstract design inspired by the beach view.

About this box

I have meticulously designed and hand-crafted this box from start to finish.  Carefully selected beechwood was sourced from the Scottish wood centre. The frame was then created using this beautiful hardwood.  The legs for the box were hand-turned by a local craftsman and then oiled in order to accentuate the beautiful grain.

For the lid design the depth of texture was created using waffle wool weaved on the Isle of Bute and hessian fabric.  The blue vegan leather provides a smooth contrast to this and vintage pink/blue abstract fabric compliments it and brings gorgeous calming tones to the box.

Beneath the upholstery I use only biodegradable wool and cotton felt to give padding to the lid and exterior.  The same combination when used for the interior gives a lovely cushioned feel alongside gorgeous textured Isle of Bute wool for added luxury.  The underside of the lid has one large and two smaller pockets to store items such as cards or photos.  The lid is held in place with high quality British brass hinges.

Lid-stay: hand-plaited twine.

Legs: Hand-turned using beechwood and finished with Osmo oil.
