This one-of-a-kind upholstered box was designed and handcrafted in my seaside studio in Edinburgh. It is made using sustainable materials and would make the perfect statement item of furniture for any room. Ideal for storing keepsakes, it can also be used as a unique footstool.
Design Inspiration
The essence of this box was to design a piece that would bring happiness. For me, the sun’s rays breaking through the clouds speak of warmth and joy; the vibrant colours and depth of texture combine to reproduce this feeling.
About this box
I have meticulously designed and hand-crafted this box from start to finish. Hand-picked beechwood was sourced from the Scottish wood centre. The frame was then hand-crafted using this beautiful hardwood. The legs for the box were hand-turned by a local craftsman and then oiled using Osmo oil in order to accentuate the beautiful grain.
The fabric has been carefully selected, and the depth of texture was created by using plum and yellow boucle wool weaved on the Isle of Bute. Vintage grey abstract fabric compliments this and the yellow vegan leather provides the gorgeous pop of colour to create the yellow sun rays.
Beneath the upholstery I use only biodegradable wool and cotton felt to give padding to the lid and exterior. The same combination on the interior gives a lovely cushioned feel alongside gorgeous textured Isle of Bute wool for added luxury. The underside of the lid has one large and two smaller pockets to store items such as cards or pictures. The lid is held in place with high quality British brass hinges.
